Modern Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer treatment has some distinct stages:

  • Radiological Diagnosis: Requires collaboration between the specialist breast surgeon and the radiologist. The diagnostic approach and the necessary breast imaging tests are determined.
  • Histological Diagnosis: Requires collaboration between the specialist breast surgeon and the pathologist-anatomist. The breast surgeon takes a sample of the lesion with directed cut needle biopsy (procedure provided at Patras Breast Care Clinic).
  • Disease Identification: If invasive breast cancer is found, before the decision to perform surgery is made, further tests must be done to make sure that there is no disease elsewhere (other foci in the breast, lymph nodes or distant metastases).
  • Psychological Support: Psychological support for the woman begins at the time of diagnosis and continues through the periods of treatment and follow-up. At the Breast Care Clinic of Patras, we ensure the immediate availability of support through our collaboration with Psychologist Olga Maria Kotopouli.
  • Choice of Surgical Intervention: The choice of surgery is the task of the qualified Mastologist – Breast Surgeon par excellence. He/she must have a broad knowledge of breast surgery techniques for each case, oncoplasty and reconstruction. Must guide the woman, explaining the aesthetic results of each different type of surgery, short and long term. Social and psychological parameters are included in the choice of surgery. Note that there are cases where other treatments must precede surgery, for example inflammatory breast cancer or the finding of metastases. Fortunately, such cases of advanced disease are in the minority.
  • Surgical Biopsy Results Analysis: Again, the Breast Surgeon will work with the Pathologist to evaluate the surgical biopsy responses. Some critical questions need to be answered. Was the entire tumor removed? What do the lymph nodes that were removed show? Is further surgery needed;
  • Oncology assessment: The appointment with the oncologist will be the next step. With a referral from the Breast Surgeon, stating the information gathered up to that point, the woman will meet with the Oncologist. She will discuss the further need for other treatments for this particular breast cancer. The Oncologist will consult and consult with the Breast Surgeon and considering the patient’s wishes, the plan of further actions will be decided upon. If chemotherapy is required, the Oncologist will recommend the most appropriate regimen of treatments and with the most suitable drugs.
  • Radiotherapy assessment: If the woman needs radiotherapy, she will also be referred to a Radiotherapist, who will explain to the woman how and why further actions will be taken
  • .

  • Long-term follow-up: The cycle of treatment effort is completed and the woman will be followed by the Breast Surgeon for life for her safety. A lifelong relationship built during difficult and defining times. Determining primarily for the woman, but also for her surgeon who beats his heart alongside her and strives for the best.
