Breast Pain or Mastodynia

Mastodynia is any uncomfortable sensation a woman may feel in her breast. Some will describe it as burning, others as pulling, pressure, stitches or weight. They will feel it either in the breast alone or in areas around the breast. They may feel it during their period only or at unrelated points in the cycle. When to be afraid of breast pain

While breast pain on its own is not particularly worrying, if it is combined with other symptoms of breast cancer, you should immediately reach your breast doctor. These are:

• Breast pain particularly localized in one spot and lasting a long time

• There is a sensation of a lump or hardness in the breast at the site of the pain

• At the site of the pain there is a change in breast shape and skin texture
• In addition to pain, there are signs of inflammation (redness, swelling, fever)

What should you expect at your appointment with your mammologist?

• Full background
• Comprehensive clinical examination
• Distinction from chest pains of other etiology (cardiac or musculoskeletal pains, etc.)
• Breast radiography will be requested according to age (breast ultrasound +/- digital mammography)

With the tests done, conclusions will be drawn and a final diagnosis will be made, which is usually the usual pain of hormonal origin.
